It's no coincidence that Massachusetts, the only state that sets insurance rates, is one of the few states where some of the nation's biggest auto insurers won't sell policies. If you can't compete by offering customers lower prices, why bother? Nor is it any surprise that the Patrick administration's plan to allow limited price competition for auto insurance is sparking opposition. The handful of politically-connected insurance companies who control the market like things just as they are. So do some insurance agents, who are pleased that Geico and other Internet-based companies that promise lower rates by cutting out the middleman - meaning, the agent - don't sell policies in the Bay State. Auto insurance in Massachusetts has been so regulated, and so politicized, for so long, that it has created a network of self-interested constituencies.
